Outback and Opals (2 Days)
Day One: Melbourne - Mungo - Andamooka
Depart Melbourne 7am. in a comfortable twin-engine aircraft for a 1.5 hr
flight to Mungo National Park. At Mungo , drive out to see the unusual "moon
scape" of Lake Mungo . Then return to the lodge for an early lunch. At 1pm fly
to Broken Hill to refuel. Then fly over The Eldee Man ( a 2 km face drawn into
the landscape) and over the Flinders Ranges and Lake Torrens to Andamooka
arriving about 3.30pm. A unique opal-mining town with a fascinating history and
a character all of its own. Be met by Margot Duke and/or Peter Taubers and
discover a wealth of warmth and colour amongst the locals. Tour around this
rough and ready and rather rugged town with Margot or Peter. See opals cut and
go down Albert's personal underground mine. Dinner and accommodation is at Dukes
Guest house.

Day Two: Andamooka -Muloorina - Melbourne
After breakfast, continue seeing around Andamooka, then tour the historic
miners cottages with Inga Duke, a wonderful German-born local, and learn
something about the uniqueness of the people who live in these places. At about
11am fly 30 minutes to Muloorina Station on the edge of Lake Eyre. Be met by the
owners , and have a brief tour of this fascinating outback
station before lunch. Depending on the temperature, maybe even a swim in the
nearby creek or thermal bore. At 2pm depart for Melbourne via the southern
Flinders Ranges (Wilpena Pound) and landing at Mildura for fuel. Then a 1.5 hour
flight to Melbourne gets us home around 7pm.
