Eulo is a small town but seems to capture the spirit and atmosphere of
Queensland's Outback. Once the bustling main centre for the opal miners, the
area was chosen for settlement given its proximity to a good waterhole on
the Paroo River. Enjoy a visit to Ian and Nan's Date Wine Farm and then a
great "outback sausage" at teh Eulo Queen hotel.
The historic Noccundra Hotel was established in 1882 and is still
licensed. This hotel is the only occupied building in the town and is well
worth a visit. It is also the site of a memorial to the ill-fated Hume
expedition, the explorer having died of thirst west of the present town
while searching for survivors of the lost Leichhardt expedition. The
aircraft is parked only 50 meters from the hotel.
Boulia is located 300 kilometres south of Mount Isa at the junction of
the Diamantina and Kennedy Development Roads. The town's fame largely rests
with its association to the Min Min Light, a strange spectral light that can
appear, hover, disappear and reappear with an eerie will of its own. Most
often described as a hovering luminescent ball, the light has teased
travellers, never approaching close enough to be clearly examined.
Scientists are baffled to explain this phenomenon. Dick Suter , or dinasaur
Dick as he is known, will show his amazing collection of bones dug up from
around this area. They are displayed in the old Stone House Museum.
